Once the plan is set, your dentist will schedule your surgery appointment. During the implantation procedure, you’ll be under local anesthesia as your dentist opens up the area where the tooth is missing. They then drill into the jawbone where the implant will be placed. A titanium artificial root is inserted into the gap and will be fixed into place, just like a real tooth. Then, the implant will fuse with the surrounding bone in a process called osseointegration.
After the implant has healed, your dentist will attach a small connector piece to the implant, which is called an abutment. The abutment will connect to a crown, which is the artificial tooth that will be placed in the mouth. Then your dentist will make impressions of your existing teeth, which will be used to create a custom replacement tooth that fits the implant perfectly.
If the implant doesn’t have enough bone to support it, your specialist may need to perform a bone graft. This can be done in the office during your procedure, and it doesn’t require a lengthy recovery.
After your implant has healed, you’ll return to the dentist for a second procedure. They’ll attach a small post to the abutment, which is used to support the crown. Then the doctor will connect the crown to the abutment with a screw.
Once your new tooth is attached, you’ll be able to eat, speak, and smile normally, and it will look just like your natural teeth.
